Artists for Trauma supports Artist Joslyn Beta Lawrence as she exhibits work from her “Into the Fray” exhibition at the Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theater during the launch of their speaker series at 7 PM on September 27, 2013. The first speaker in this year’s series will be Dr. Eben Alexander, author of NY Times bestseller, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey through the Afterlife.

Dr. Alexander is currently one of the world’s most sought after motivational speakers and has appeared on Oprah, Katie Couric, and the Jeff Probst Show. The topic for the evening’s discussion will be, Synthesis of Science and Spirituality: The Arc of Human Destiny over Millenia.

In his book, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey, Dr. Alexander relates the story of his near-death experience. Alexander’s account provides a crucial key to the understanding of reality and human consciousness and has made an impact on how spirituality, our souls, and the non-material are viewed. Among the calming messages in his nonfiction work is: there is no need to fear, and we are unconditionally loved.

The interpretive artwork of artist Joslyn Lawrence, depicting near-death experiences, will be displayed in the lobby at the Lincoln Theater for viewing prior to the show, and Copperfield’s Books will host a post-show Proof of Heaven book signing also in the lobby. Ticket prices are $18, $25, and $45 (VIP post-show wine reception and meet and greet), available by calling the Lincoln Theater Box Office at (707) 944-9900 or by visiting www.lincolntheater.org

Joslyn Lawrence told us, “This series of work began after I became close to a Level One Trauma survivor, Laura Sharpe, who is the founder of Artists For Trauma. Laura’s extraordinary story of ‘divine intervention’ moved me to begin researching Near Death Experiences, or, as they are known, NDE’s. Almost all experiencers describe seeing a bright white light, meeting deceased loved ones or other beings and all describe an overwhelming sense of forgiveness, unconditional love and peace regardless of religion or personal history. Many people never share these experiences because when they do, they are not believed.

On a personal level, these stories tap into my core spiritual beliefs, and so the work is an attempt to illustrate an encounter with this light and the possibility that something might lie beyond. All of the people who agreed to be photographed have been interviewed about their relationship with death and how it has changed them. It has led me to wonder, what if humanity knew in no uncertain terms that unconditional love and forgiveness was waiting for us after this life? How would we live differently? How might we be driven by different goals? And how might it change the way we relate to others?”
